We come to ensure that you have a realistic understanding of the adoption process and its lifelong implications.<\/p>\n<p>We are on your team and we want you to welcome home a little one nearly as much as you do! Many of us become quite close to our home study families \u2013 we root for you, empathize with you and pray for Finalization Day alongside you.\u00a0In the hopes of putting some minds at ease, here is a collection of tips, tricks, and info to help get you ready for your first home visit.<\/p>\n<p><u>Steps to Take Before the Visit<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Write an amazing autobiography. Remember, sharing is caring \u2013 be generous with your words when writing your biographical information.<\/li>\n<li>Complete your paperwork.\u00a0Caseworkers can\u2019t get to know you if we don\u2019t have all of your background information.<\/li>\n<li>Outline your expectations and talk about your comfort levels \u2013 what is the background of the child you\u2019re looking to welcome home? Do you have any apprehensions? Communication is key.<\/li>\n<li>Make a list of all the adoption questions you\u2019ve had but were too afraid to ask. Nothing you say is going to shock us, I promise!<\/li>\n<li>Make sure your home is 100% safe, with up to date fire extinguishers, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and a water safety plan if you have a pool or live near water.<\/li>\n<li>Identify a good place in the house to sit and talk. Ideally, this is somewhere that provides ample space for the caseworker to take notes. A dining room table is usually the perfect spot!<\/li>\n<li>Take a few deep breaths and get a good night\u2019s sleep beforehand.<\/li>\n<li>Keep in mind and understand that we aren\u2019t looking for perfection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Some Things to <strong>Avoid<\/strong> Before the Visit<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Having a meltdown.<\/li>\n<li>Hiring a cleaning service.<\/li>\n<li>Making cookies, cakes, or any kind of baked goods (We do so many visits, we really can\u2019t eat all those treats!)<\/li>\n<li>Forgetting to think of questions or have internal conversations about your adoption comfort levels.<\/li>\n<li>Childproofing the house.<\/li>\n<li>Setting up a nursery. Caseworkers just need to see that the home has the <em>space<\/em> for a child.\u00a0In the end, the only thing you\u2019ll need on placement day is a car seat. You can stop at Target for the rest on the way home from the hospital!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>What to Expect <\/u><u>When the Caseworker Arrives<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A short tour of your home. Caseworkers need to see the garage and backyard too!\u00a0 The tour shouldn\u2019t last more than a few minutes.<\/li>\n<li>A quick visit with the pets. Allow a few minutes to pet the dog or say hello to the cats.<\/li>\n<li>Questions from the caseworker about the paperwork you\u2019ve submitted. We are probably going to focus mostly on your relationship, why you\u2019re on the adoption journey, your expectations of becoming a parent, and your formative years.<\/li>\n<li>A review of the adoption process. \u00a0If you are using HOA for your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heartofadoptions.com\/pregnant\/\">Adoption in Florida<\/a> (both the home study and placement services) this overview can be pretty in-depth.<\/li>\n<li>Introductions to other family members. Be prepared for caseworkers to speak with anyone else that lives in the home or is present at the time of the visit. If you have children, caseworkers like to see the interactions between parent and child.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The best advice that can be given to prospective parents during<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heartofadoptions.com\/hoping-to-adopt\/\"> the adoption process<\/a> is to <em>keep asking questions. <\/em>Agencies are here to answer those questions, whether they be logistical in nature or requests for additional support.
