Facing Roadblocks in the Home Study

Even with the best preparation, challenges can pop up during the home study process. These hurdles are more common than many families realize—and most have simple, manageable solutions.

Delays

•Cause: Waiting on references, background checks, fingerprinting, or medical forms that take longer than expected.

• Solution: Send reminders early, follow up politely, and keep close communication with your agency so nothing slips through the cracks.

Anxiety

• Cause: Fear of being judged, not meeting expectations, or being denied approval.

• Solution: Reframe the home study as a collaborative process. Case workers are there to assess safety and prepare you, not to look for reasons to disqualify you. Ask questions, share concerns, and let them guide you.

Sensitive Topics

• Cause: Past mistakes, financial struggles, mental-health history, or medical conditions that feel vulnerable to discuss.

• Solution: Be honest and transparent. Case workers value insight, self-awareness, and evidence of growth. Many families with imperfect histories are still approved—openness matters far more than perfection.

Feeling Overwhelmed

• Cause: Trying to manage the paperwork, appointments, and emotional load all at once.

• Solution: Break tasks into smaller steps, set weekly goals, and lean on your support system.

It’s okay to ask your agency for clarity or additional guidance.

Overcoming these challenges often builds resilience—a strength that will serve you well in parenting, especially in adoption where flexibility and emotional attunement are essential.
